Miniature Poodle

The Miniature Poodle was bred down from the German water retriever to a size that suited French drawing rooms, then put back to work anyway - trained to sniff out truffles in the woods when it was not being clipped for the show ring. Underneath that elaborate coat is one of the sharpest minds in the dog world: quick to learn, quick to notice when it has been ignored, and usually several steps ahead of whoever is holding the lead.

Each portrait is an original watercolour: confident, visible brushstrokes on cold-press paper, in the tradition of natural-history illustration rather than smoothed-over digital art. Real paper grain, real pigment variation, the occasional soft bloom where wet colour met wet colour.

This portrait keeps the tight curl of the coat and the alert, faintly amused tilt of the head that gives this breed away instantly.
