German Shepherd

The German Shepherd was developed in Germany in the 1890s by Max von Stephanitz, who wanted a herding dog capable of near-endless work and quick thinking. That versatility made them the default choice for police, military and guide work within a few decades of the breed's founding. Living with one means living with a dog that needs a job - they are watchful, deeply loyal to their people, and unhappy left with nothing to do.

Each portrait is an original watercolour: confident, visible brushstrokes on cold-press paper, in the tradition of natural-history illustration rather than smoothed-over digital art. Real paper grain, real pigment variation, the occasional soft bloom where wet colour met wet colour.
