French Bulldog

The bat ears settle the question before anything else does. French Bulldogs began as the toy bulldogs of Nottingham lace workers, carried across to France when the trade moved, and the French kept the upright ear the English had been busy breeding out. What came back was a compact, muscular, surprisingly heavy little dog built almost entirely for company - too dense to swim, too flat-faced to run far, and serenely uninterested in doing either.

Each portrait is an original watercolour: confident, visible brushstrokes on cold-press paper, in the tradition of natural-history illustration rather than smoothed-over digital art. Real paper grain, real pigment variation, the occasional soft bloom where wet colour met wet colour.

A short coat gives watercolour nowhere to hide: the whole portrait rests on those ears and the folds of the face, so the paint is kept thin and the paper left to do the rest.
