Bengal Cat

The Bengal was developed in the 1960s and 80s by crossing the Asian leopard cat with domestic breeds, an attempt to put a wild cat's build into a house cat's temperament. The result kept more of the wild than most breeders expected: Bengals climb, open cupboards, and treat water taps as personal entertainment. Living with one means keeping the cat busy, because an under-stimulated Bengal will simply stimulate itself.

Each portrait is an original watercolour: confident, visible brushstrokes on cold-press paper, in the tradition of natural-history illustration rather than smoothed-over digital art. Real paper grain, real pigment variation, the occasional soft bloom where wet colour met wet colour.

This portrait keeps the low, muscled crouch and the direct, unblinking stare that make a Bengal look ready to pounce.
